Arguably, the most insidious form of homophobia is not motivated by a deliberately hateful agenda. It is thoughtless, reflexive habit – all the more dangerous in its casual nature. Which is exactly the brand of intolerance being explored through the Kurt/Burt/Finn dynamic: relationships infused with prejudice, but involving likable characters on all sides. And thanks to this frank and complex portrayal, it’s likely that some viewers, particularly young ones, will become a little more aware of the habitual air jordan 2011, perhaps even unintentional, but ultimately incredibly harmful homophobia that is still shockingly pervasive in today's high school culture.
Dealing with Homophobia
The relationship among these three is not going to be wrapped up nicely. Kurt is not going to get over his crush in a snap. Finn is not going to suddenly become gay for a happily ever after. And Burt is not going to easily lay down arms and stop teetering through the angry/loyal liminal space he's occupying as he tries not just to protect his son but also to make up for years of his own homophobia with excess vitriol. Ironically, it is Burt's vehement anti-homophobia, protesting too much in order to show his love for Kurt, that is the most poisonous element in this situation. When Burt tells Finn he is disappointed in him because he thought he was a new kind of man, born tolerant, it is a sort of cop-out, a case of wishful thinking. But it also expresses a rare, realistic representation of the face of homophobia today.
One of the great joys of Glee is its after-school special atmosphere, the way it embraces all types and colours and sizes, creating a hyperreality of permissiveness and harmony. Witness the big black girl dating the school stud; the pregnant teen doling out life lessons; the Jewish girl with biracial gay dads. But perhaps the most interesting tactic the show uses to fight stereotypes is its unconventional, and surprisingly complex, exploration of what it means to be a young man in today's world - a world which, while outwardly progressive, is still saturated with gender expectations. There have been some larger-than-life, iconic moments of departure from gender norms on Glee this season: the football team training to "Single Ladies"; Kurt (Chris Colfer) coming out to his father; the boys of New Directions singing Madonna’s "What it Feels Like for a Girl". But the real power Glee has to inform and influence its audience's ideas about masculinity resides not in its flashy musical numbers so much as its more grounded, character-driven scenes.
This season's most affecting moment involved not singing, but shouting. It became apparent early on that Kurt has a crush on Finn (Corey Monteith), the well-meaning, somewhat clueless jock who sings lead vocals in the club. This alone would make for an interesting storyline - but Glee, in true theatrical fashion, pushes this situation to its dramatic limits. And so - in a feat of dubious (Kurt's house has only one bedroom?), but affecting storytelling - their friendship is complicated by the union of their heretofore single parents. Kurt is ecstatic to be sharing a room with the object of his affections; Finn is uncomfortable, but tries to play along. Finally, it becomes too much for him, however, and in the subsequent blowout, he uses a homophobic slur. Finn being Finn, as non-threatening a male lead as has ever graced television, he addresses it to a particularly gaudy blanket jordan 11 xi, rather than Kurt. But Kurt's father, Burt (the hardworking Mike O'Malley), overhears air jordans 11, and joins the fray. Finn is kicked out of the house.
