East-German movies and Reunification
Movies made in East Germany are often kind of surrealistic. Like the music from the former East-Germany those movies wanted to deliver a specific message, the longing for freedom, the longing to travel and to get outside of the dividing “wall”. Heiner Carows Paul und Paula (Die Legende von Paul und Paula, 1973) is a very romantic one, which also features some former East-German Rock-music. The German movie-scene offers a wide variety of genres, topics and influences. The German reunification is a big topic as well as the migration of the guest workers from Turkey and the integration of the 2nd and 3rd integration.
Influence from Turkey
The following is just a selection of the more well known German movies.
In recent years there were some international successful movies coming from Germany. Tom Tykwers Perfume (Das Parfum – Die Geschichte eines Mörders, 2006) is one example. Doris Dörrie, the director who became famous for her comedies in the 90ies made a wonderful cineastic piece about the relationship between an widower and a young Japanese woman: Hanami (Kirschblüten – Hanami, 2008). But there are also some older German movies by acclaimed directors, which were big in the 70ies and 80ies and now are classics. Examples are Werner Herzogs The Wrath of God (Aguirre, Der Zorn Gottes, 1972); all of the Wim Wenders movies, like Wings of Desire</em
Starting with Doris Dörris’ Männer German filmmakers discovered the genre comedy, which moves right into the time of the German reunification – inspiring aspiring filmmakers to some tragic-comical stories, for example Good Bye, Lenin! By Wolfgang Becker. More and more the German film-scene acquired international recognition again. Movies like Run, Lola, Run (Tom Tykwer), The story of the weeping camel (Die Geschichte vom weinenden Kamel by Byambasuren Davaa and Luigi Falorni) won an Oscar 2005 for best documentary, Nowhere in Africa (Nirgendwo in Afrika) by Caroline Link won an Oscar 2003 for best foreign movie and Uli Edels Baader Meinhof Komplex was nominated for the Oscar 2009.
Another important influence for the German movie scene are Turkish-German writers and directors. One of the most acclaimed ones is Fatih Akin, whose latest movie Sould Kitchen just was released. His other movies, Head On (Gegen die Wand, 2004) Jordan Retro 11, and Juli (2000) also deal with Turkish-German relations.
