No restaurant shows-off Tucson’s history or delicious Sonoran Mexican cuisine better than El Charro Café. Owner-Chef, Carlotta Flores, continues the tradition begun by her great-aunt Monica Flin. Monica was one of Tucson’s first businesswomen, opening the El Charro Café at 311 North Court Avenue over 85 years ago in the old family home, after struggling in 3 other café locations before her father willed the home to her.
Peek at the Most Famous Carne Seca: Rating 5 of 5
See the device which helps create the unique signature beef selection, Carne Seca [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], made for all the El Charro Cafes at the original El Charro Café on Court Avenue. The other El Charro Café sites serve the dish, but visitors can only see how it is made at the historic 311 N. Court Avenue, El Charro Café site. The Famous Carne Seca Plate is $16.95 and worth every penny. It is gluten-sensitive and has been hailed by Gourmet Magazine. Other Mexican cafes, restaurants, and diners in Southern Arizona make Carne Seca, but none come close to the full flavors in El Charro’s secret family recipe. It is worth the drive to any of the five locations, and especially to the historic original El Charro Cafe. Monica’s Carne Seca seems to taste best in the old homestead still decorated in Monica's vintage collections.
All 4 El Charro Cafés offer the same menus and consistent quality food and service. However Lynn Pritchett, a travel cuisine reviewer, recommends first timers experience the authenticity of the historic El Charro Café at 311 Court Avenue, to fully appreciate the legacy of Tucson’s Mexican food traditions in Monica and Carlotta’s Sonoran Desert cooking and early 20th century history. It takes little imagination to feel like a guest in Carlotta’s great-grandfather’s home, nibbling homemade salsa and chips while making menu selections from the family recipes.
The original El Charro Cafe at 311 Court Avenue is included in the national registry of historic places as Site Number 14 in El Presidio District. It is the oldest continuously family-owned café in the Arizona territory [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], according to the book, El Charro Café: Tastes and Traditions of Tucson, by Carlotta Flores [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 1998 Fisher Books, available new and used on Flores and her husband, Raymond, own and operate 4 El Charro’s in the greater Tucson, Arizona area, their catering business, Cocina Charro, their wholesale food company, Conchita Foods, and Carlotta’s cooking classes, Carlotta’s Cocina.

Friends who have lived in Mexico, and know the Sonoran recipes from South of the Border, have commented time after time that the El Charro dessert, Tres Leches Cake, is the most authentic they have tasted anywhere on this gringo side of the border. The reviewer simply knows that she must save room for a $6.99 slice of Tres Leches at each visit.
The El Charro Café dinner menu deservedly boasts the Carne Seca Chimichanga makes El Charro the “Home of the Chimichanga according to USA Today Newspaper,” which also named El Charro in its “50 Best Plates in America.” The Carne Seca Chimichanga comes with the works for $19.22, and feeds two people or just goes ahead and asks the server to bring a take-out box. If eating this as one person, there’ll be plenty of left-overs to bring home.
The service is good each El Charro site, with Ray
