William Somerset Maugham
People, real people, cannot change so dramatically in such a short space of period. Somerset Maugham was an amazing author because he depicted 'real people' and real people character- either the good and wrong. By no granting Kitty her ultimate fault the movie drops the viewer by the end of the novel without the final obstacle that the protagonist had apt vanquish in the incipient anecdote line- this is the real disgrace of the film, as beautifully crafted as it is with unbelievable performing go from Edward Norton and Naomi Watts.

Novel- The Painted Veil
""Freedom! Not only freedom from a bond that irked, and a companionship which depressed her; freedom, not only from the death which had intimidated, but freedom the love that had degraded her; freedom from all spiritual knots [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the freedom of a disembodied spirit; and with freedom, prowess and a valiant unconcern for however was to come"
Kitty is often referring to her 'freedom' throughout the novel. At the starting it is a freedom that allows her to do what she wants but inevitably this corners into a freedom from the selfish personality that has gripped her her whole life:

From Print to Film
In 'The Painted Veil' Somerset Maugham not only focused above the inherent clashes of early Anglo-Sino narrations yet those of its chief protagonists Kitty and Walter. The difficulties in Kitty's relationship with Walter however are clearly characterized in a dualistic bad guy/good fellow shape. Walter is the good physician that stations himself in China to save entire the sick Chinese inhabitants from typhoid. Kitty however is a selfish matron who married Walter, a man she does not love [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in array to be married off before her younger sister did. She not only tricks on Walter who is completely devoted and in love with her but is shown to be spiritually die inside as well.
She learnt this lesson not afterward Walter's necrosis but afterward slumbering with the man who she cheated with Walter originally, Charles Townsend, once repeatedly after appropriate a widower. In the novel Maugham accordingly allows for that final mistake from Kitty in order for her to know that she absences to transform what Walter once thought she was- a pride and intelligent woman.

In the film however Kitty's metamorphosis comes approximately through Walter's death. In fact [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in the film she meets with Charles Townsend one more time and rejects him. This inevitably means that Kitty's metamorphosis into the good and proud woman she becomes comes almost prematurely and the viewer is left with a feeling that the whole object was wrapped up to quickly.

But Maugham had a very redeeming message- whether one is proficient to study to adore others they will eventually be able to love themselves.
