According to Food & Wine magazine, Toronto’s own St. Lawrence Market is one of the top 25 markets in the WORLD. Anyone who has visited the venerable market- which by the way has been around since 1803 (ancient in North American terms), knows that the merchants and food artisans within are worth visiting time and time again.
Caviar Direct offers Canadian farmed caviar and smoked seafood. Given the ban on wild Sturgeon caviar these days, chefs and gourmands are opting for quality farmed caviar that’s receiving rave reviews after being snubbed for so long. For more about this, go to: .
As a local, the St. Lawrence Market is our number one stop when planning either a dinner party or just picking up some quality items to stock our pantry or fridge. Luckily, my husband works down the street from the market, so he becomes our “Boy Friday” (yeah, he’s going to love that I just called him that) when we’ve got items to pick up. Recently, when suite101 Gourmet Writer Jacqueline Church and her husband Caleb were recently in town from Boston [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Mario got to play tour guide and show them some of his favourite haunts.
You may have read Mario’s carnivorous missive- the Prosciutto Primer piece - where Scheffler’s Delicatessen & Cheese shop is the source for quality porcine products. It’s also home to some fine Manchego (my favourite Spanish cheese), Pecorino, Brie and just about any other fantastic cheese you can think of. A wonderful shop offering the very best to create an appetizer plate, or to end a dinner with a cheese plate (how French, non?).
Downstairs, Mario makes the occasional stop to the “honey guy” as we call him. More precisely, the place I’m talking about is Honey World where a very enthusiastic owner will offer you copious taste-tests of intriguing honeys until you’ve got a sugar rush par excellence. From NZ Leatherwood to French Provencal Lavender honey- he’s got just about every kind on offer, including organic honeycomb drenched in its golden elixir.

Mario has made friends with one green grocer in particular who likes to give him a buck or two off every purchase (call it an informal loyalty rewards program). The market is known for its farmer’s fresh produce- from Ontario grown peaches and apples to herbs and greens- the proof is in the taste [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]! Buying bulk from commercial grocery stores sadly isn’t even close…
Finally, I leave you with The Mustard Emporium- the work of master mustard maker, Anton Kozlik. From cinnamon-infused to tarragon mustards, Kozlik (originally from South Africa) makes some of the best gourmet mustard and vinegar around. I think Jacqui and Caleb enjoyed this particular pit stop.
It’s a pleasure to show other food-buffs what’s tasty and interesting in Toronto- especially when they enjoy the discovery of a new food item as much as we do. Until the next time, Buen Provecho! For some great gift-giving ideas and Jaqui's take on her St. Lawrence experience, go to and indulge [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]!
