The expedition then turned south, eventually reaching the coast of Guyana in South America. Here Vespucci split from the group in order to continue south. On this voyage, Vespucci discovered the Amazon River, then continued as far south as Cape St. Augustine. He then returned north to the Caribbean Sea, discovering the mouth of the Orinoco River and exploring Trinidad and Haiti.
Early Life in Europe
Amerigo Vespucci, explorer and cartographer, is a significant figure in geographical history. He explored the newly discovered American continents by ship, providing vital information and maps of their shorelines. He was also the first European explorer to correctly argue that the land was not the easternmost edge of Asia, but rather a truly New World.
According to Roberto Almagia in the Encyclopedia Britannica Online (2009), Vespucci was born around 1454 in Florence, Italy, the son of a notary. He was educated by his uncle. As a young man, he was employed by the powerful Medici family. In 1479, he was charged with the task of meeting with the French king on behalf of the family. Proving his skills, he went on to work in Medici banks.

By the 1490s, Vespucci was outfitting ships for exploration. In late 1495 or early 1496, the Medicis promoted Vespucci to a management position in their Sevilla [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Spain agency. This job provided Vespucci with the opportunities to take part in the expeditions that made him famous.
It is generally believed that Vespucci did not join any more expeditions after returning to Europe in 1502, although he continued to outfit ships. In 1505, he began worki
The significance of this second voyage is twofold. First, it provided Vespucci with more information about the region’s geography, allowing him to compose maps. Second, it was on this voyage that Vespucci keenly began to realize that this land was not a part of Asia. The historians at U-S-History.com point out that Vespucci was the first European explorer to successfully argue this point. According to Almagia, this is what led cartographer Martin Waldseemuller to suggest calling the new lands “Americus” or “America” in 1507. Originally, the name America was used to describe only South America. Later, the name was extended to North America.
Some sources indicate that Vespucci was actively involved in maritime exploration as early as 1497; however, the first conclusive evidence of a voyage shows that he set sail from Spain in May 1499 as the navigator of a Spanish ship. The expedition sailed to the Gulf of Mexico, then up North America’s Atlantic coast from Florida to the Chesapeake Bay.
Vespucci, like many of his contemporaries, believed he was exploring the extreme eastern shores of the Asian continent. Hoping that he would soon discover a western passage to the rich markets of Asia, he returned to Europe to organize another expedition. Sponsored by Portugal [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Vespucci set sail again at the end of 1500, westward bound for India. Between 1501 and 1502, he visited many locations around the Atlantic Ocean, the first being the Cape Verde Islands. From there, he traveled to Brazil. The rest of his voyage is debated by historians, but many believe that Vespucci may have traveled south to Guanabara Bay [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the current location of Rio de Janeiro, and perhaps as far as the Rio de la Plata, which would make him the first European to do so. Some historians also believe that he continued south and surveyed the coast of Patagonia in what is now Argentina. His return route to Europe is unknown.
