One object that stands out from the attack namely that the most momentous portions of the writing take place during winter [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the bleakest period of the annual. The writing opens in winter; the fable of Ethan and Mattie takes area in winter; and by an point Ethan even marvels whether he would ever have marital Zeena if his mama had not died in the winter.
Frome’
The reader knows that either of Ethans parents succumbed to ailment and as such he has spent many years surrounded by cancer and decease. Through the use of the aforementioned symbolism, Matties lively and vivacious identity comes cross as equitable the thing that has always been missing from his life. After years of unhappiness with the ailing Zeena, the thought of losing Mattie is understandably too much to bear.
Mattie on the additional hand is portrayed as young and full of life and her character is closely linked with the color red, which typically represents life and sustenance. Her cheeks are often flushed; when her character is 1st introduced, excellent concern is given in describing her lip as vibrant and cherry-colored; and she winds both a red scarf and a red bandage through her hair at another parts of the story. It is a color associated with energy and life (partial due to its connotations with blood), so by associating Mattie with this color, Wharton provides a sharp compare to Zeenas sickly demeanor. Whenever Ethan talks to her [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], though he is still a man of few words, he talks extra freely and on lighter subjects than those that come up in his chats with his wife.
In mandate for the reader to sympathize with Ethan, it was important that Wharton made it look as whereas it were reasonable for him to hate his wife so many; aboard that note, it was equally important that it seem reasonable for him to like Mattie so many. Wharton does this by selectively choosing how she describes each character, as well as the achieve that every persona has aboard Ethan. For sample, Wharton forever describes Zeena negatively [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], characterizing her as age, sickly, painful, and selfish. At one particular point in the story she describes Zeenas disloyal teeth sitting in a glass a repulsive image at best.

The Color Red
By having the entirety of the book take place during this season, the connotations of winter engrain themselves into the story. From the quite starting, the reader has a feeling of hopelessness and vacancy. As such, when Ethan yearns because pleasure (as represented at the active Mattie) the reader identifies with him and is always also ambitioning to basis for him even condoning the concept of his impending adultery.
Furthermore, anytime Ethan has to speak to Zeena his answers are short and his words both neutral alternatively frustrated. Two important conversations between Ethan and Zeena are even carried out in the darkness of a small bedroom. One is when Zeena confronts Ethan about waking up early and shaving every morning (a habit he had begun since Mattie had arrived) and the other is when she tells him that Mattie is to be sent away and replaced with a hired girl. By doing this, Zeena is never portrayed with the light that Mattie is; instead she is always portrayed, very literally, in darkness.
Winter: Theme and Setting
In her book, Ethan Frome, Edith Wharton conveys a sense of what its like to feel trapped and hopeless by presenting the reader with a tragic anecdote of one pessimistic marriage and the misadventure that circles it. Wharton imparts this sense of confinement via her use of symbolism in coalition with character and graph evolution.
