Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox snagged the #3 spot (behind the live-action Star Trek) with a 93% rating while Henry Selick stop-motion adaptation of Neil Gaiman's Coraline took #7 with 89% and Hayao Miyazaki's Ponyo edged out the current Best Picture favourite Up in the Air for the #9 position [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], taking 91%. Coraline received more reviews than Ponyo, plus a higher aggregate score, which might explain why that film's higher up the list with a lower percentile.
Rotten Tomatoes doesn't review films: instead they collect the published opinions of more than 200 movie reviewers in order to give a movie a "Tomatometer" percentile score [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], based on what percentage of reviewers liked the film and the average numerical score they gave that movie.
Rotten Tomatoes Calls Disney/Pixar's Up Best Reviewed Film of 2009
"Every year since we started doing this award, if (Disney/Pixar's) got a movie [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they win," said Rotten Tomatoes editor-in-chief Matt Atchity about the award. "They just consistently turn out really good quality movies."

As for the other notable animated films of 2009: Disney Animation's The Princess and the Frog was edged out of competition with a still-respectable 84% score (and a Certified Fresh rating), while DreamWorks Animation's Monsters vs. Aliens received 72%. Sony/Illion Animation's Planet 51 got squashed with a lowly 23% rating.
Coraline, Fantastic Mr. Fox and Ponyo Also Make Rotten Tomatoes' Top 10 of 2009
As predicted, 2009 was a banner year for animated film as 4 movies made Rotten Tomatoes' Top 10 list of best-reviewed movies, and a Disney/Pixar film once again took the top spot.
This is the 6th year in the award's 11-year history that Disney/Pixar has taken home the Golden Tomato. In previous years, RT has honoured 2008's WALL-E, 2007's Ratatouille, 2004's The Incredibles, 2003's Finding Nemo and 1999's Toy Story 2. Only Aardman Animation has pulled off a similar feat, winning Golden Tomatoes for 2005's Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit and 2000's Chicken Run.
For the third year a row, RT handed its Golden Tomato Award – honouring the film that received the highest proportion of positive-to-negative reviews – to the Emeryville Studio, honouring Up. The Pete Docter/Bob Peterson film received a 98% rating on the site, which means that 247 out of 252 reviewers polled loved the flick. Not surprisingly, Up also topped Rotten Tomatoes' Best Animation category.
"On behalf of the entire Pixar creative team, I wanted to thank both the fans and the critics community for honoring Up with such an unprecedented honor," said director Pete Docter.
Not surprisingly, those 4 films also topped Rotten Tomatoes' Best Animation category, which only had 5 spots. Sony Pictures Animation's Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs took the final slot, earning an 85% rating.
