Plans underway for 2011 [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Hall of Fame Triathlon
PARRY SOUND – Plans for the 2011 [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Hall of Fame Triathlon are underway.
Late last month, town council approved the budget for the annual event.
The event started two years ago, a joint effort between local businesses, volunteers, the [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Hall of Fame (BOHF) and the Town of Parry Sound.
Bialkowski TriSport owner Dave Bialkowski partnered with the event, acting as race director/co-ordinator.
“Cheryl Ward, manager for the [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Hall of Fame and the Hall of Fame committee has provided the volunteer support required for the actual day of execution of the event for the past two years as to create a safe, fun, festival atmosphere,” said town leisure services coordinator April McNamara in her report to council. “Once approvals are granted, staff, along with Mr. Bialkowski, will plan and coordinate the various categories for participation from elite athletes, to everyday amateurs with the primary focus being to get out and active promotion of good sportsmanship and fun.”
The budget is $7,050, with $7,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],500 expected in revenues for the Aug. 21 event.
“To be clear, this is not an event that would compete or replace the annual West Parry Sound Health Centre’s Walk, Run, Roll event that is held annually in the spring, as that is not a triathlon,” said McNamara. “This will be an Ontario Association Triathlete’s sanctioned event with the three triathlon components.”
The event is considered an economic development driver; 91 athletes [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] participated in 2010, with 56 per cent of participants from the GTA.
“There is no downside, only advantages…and at no cost other than staff time to the town,” said town CAO Rob Mens.
