Sitting at Moth’s bedside in the hospital after she had been shot, CNN’s Chief International Correspondent Christiane Amanpour received a call from the editor. He asked if Amanpour would go back to the war zone again to report. Fighting back tears [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she said in a documentary made by CNN on Moth, “I said I'd go back, and I know to this day that if I hadn't said yes then, I probably never would have gone back, and I never would have done this career. But I said yes because I couldn't say no. We did the work for her. We did it because she was our champion, and we wanted to be her champion.”
Gayle Young, former CNN Cairo correspondent however recalls “Margaret rollerblading through the halls of the Al-Rasheed Hotel in Baghdad with a glass of Baileys Irish Cream. He points out that “this was right after her first round of surgeries when her face was still very swollen and misshapen. But she didn't try to hide her scars with a scarf.” (CNN website)

Early Life
Margaret Moth was a cameraperson at a time when photojournalism was almost exclusively an all male domain. She was part of a very small group of women who chose the career then, and in an almost unheard of thing in those times, there were five camerawomen working for CNN in international locations. One of them, Cynde Strand, who is now CNN’s director of coverage for international news wrote in her tribute to Moth on CNN website: “We were hard-core when it came to camerawork. We pushed the envelope, and we took shots that would take your breath away.”
Colleagues remember her determination to return to the war zone in Sarajevo in 1992 after she had been hit in the face by a sniper. CNN's senior vice president of international newsgathering [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Parisa Khosravi, writing in her tribute to Moth on CNN website reminisced the time; “I remember being there when she arrived at the Mayo Clinic, her head was all bandaged up and she could not speak, but she was fully alert. I gave her a pen and paper and she jokingly wrote: I want to go back to Sarajevo to look for my teeth.”

Breaking the Glass Ceiling
Moth worked for CNN for about two decades covering conflicts in Israel, Palestine, Sarajevo, Sierra Leone and Iraq among others. The people she worked with remember her as an unmatched professional [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], an extremely private but fun loving person. They admired her motto of living life to the fullest and saw in her someone who faced all challenges in life with fortitude and courage.
Hit by a Sniper in Sarajevo
Born Margaret Wilson in Gisborne, New Zealand, she reportedly changed her name to Margaret Moth after the Tiger Moth airplane. She started her work in her home country before moving to US where she contributed to KHOU in Houston, Texas and shifted to CNN in 1990
After this near fatal injury, Margaret had to undergo several reconstructive surgeries to her face and also contracted Hepatitis C from an infected blood transfusion that was administered to her sometime after being hit.
