The story is based on the life of Dr Mangosuthu Buthelezi's mother, Princess Constance Magogo kaDinuzulu (1900-1984), who was widely recognized as a singer, composer, musician, teacher, and political activist. The music is a blend of Zulu traditional, featuring much of the princess' work as well as traditional operatic conventions.
The performance begins with Princess Magogo, who is at the end of her life, looking back. In these flashbacks, the audience witnesses her public fight for the unification of the Zulu people and the personal struggle of this non-conformist woman between her duties as the king's daughter and as a woman.
Princess Magogo – a Zulu Opera, first premiered at the Playhouse Theatre in Durban, South Africa in 2002. The production attracted international attention and was broadcast live to the USA, UK, and Europe.
According to the opera’s librettist, Themba Msimang “she was a custodian of the people’s culture and born at a crucial time in Zulu history. At the time, the British were trying to squash the Zulu monarchy. They were amazed to discover how intense and how intricate the Zulu royal system was of which she was a direct descendant”.
The opera, set against a turbulent historical background, captures and is a celebration of the life and music making traditions of the indigenous people of KZN.

Princess Magogo kaDinuzulu was quite a remarkable woman. Her vast repertoire of traditional Zulu songs extends back as far as the 18th century and her fame extends beyond KwaZulu-Natal, and transcends cultural borders.
Historian, Professor Themba Msimang wrote the libretto, while composer Mzilikazi Khumalo was the obvious choice for the score, as he had researched Zulu music for more than 50 years.
